24 Cats In Apartment Nets Animal Cruelty Charges

RENSSELAER?A Rensselaer couple is facing 24 counts of animal cruelty after 24 cats were found in their two bedroom apartment without food and water.

Police said Gene F. Bailey, 30, and Lindsay Bailey, 25, were living in the apartment with the cats.

Police were called to the residence by Child Protective Services.? An animal control officer removed the cats which were taken to Co mpanionAnimal Placement Center and Pond View Country Kennel.? One cat was placed under the care of a veterinarian.

The Baileys were each charged with 24 counts of overdriving, torturing and injuring animals and failure to provide proper sustenance.

The city code enforcement office condemned the apartment, ruling it uninhabitable as it was filled with cat feces.

The couple was arraigned in Rensselaer City Court and released on their own recognizance.? They are due back in court on Jan. 11.? 1-8-12
