Ever since having kids, my shopping habits have completely changed. After discovering kid's consignment stores, that is the only place I shop for kid's clothes and shoes. I am also obsessed with consignment stores in general, as I have an addiction to designer labels at thrift store prices. It works for our family, since we are on a pretty tight budget.

It has been at least three or four years since I have been in a real department store in the kids clothing section. So I was a little shocked (and a little sad) by what I saw last week when I was in JC Penny's girls department.

I read all the articles about childhood obesity, and I see it every day at school and at after school activities, but walking by a 'Plus Size for Girls' section of the department store put it all in perspective.Clearly there is a market for clothes designed for overweight kids.

I understand that parenting is extremely tough, especially when it comes to food - my kids eat more than their fair share of crap. Here is what I don't understand. If a parent knows the pain, struggles, and frustration of being overweight, why would they ever allow their kids to endure the same agony?

We know that parents influence kids every day with words and actions, and when mom and dad regularly encourage kids to be active, they help kids to appreciate fitness and have fun along the way.

Teaching practical life skills is one of the many roles that parents have. Things like how to brush teeth, how to tell time, how to tie shoes, and to add one more to the list - how to be healthy and active.

It's never too late to start a healthy habit, especially with kids. Kids like to move, and though it is highly unlikely that a child goes from couch potato to Olympian, there are several ways parents can influence their children to exercise.

While verbal encouragement or logistical support, such as driving kids to soccer practice, is important, parents' attitudes about health and fitness and their own patterns of physical activity are equally as important, since kids often follow by example.

Being active together has shown to have a significant impact on how kids view exercise, but it often goes down as a child's age goes up. Younger children are more likely to want to spend time being active with their parents than teenagers, so there may be a window of opportunity to use it before losing it when it comes to co-activity.

And even though the sphere of influence on kids can be far and wide from friends to teachers to Sponge Bob, few are as direct and important as parents.

Children are well known for their contrary nature. Tell them to do something, and quite often they will do the opposite. So trying to force children to exercise may not be the best strategy.

Every parent has his or her way of approaching life lessons, but the idea with fitness is to get children to appreciate being active, and have a little fun along the way. "Because I said so" may work for putting the dishes away, but encouragement, celebrating small victories, and doing things together can be effective ways to motivate kids to get fit and stay active. And no child wants their brain to turn to mush because of too much television.

Whether is it sports, riding bikes, a martial arts class, or walking the dog every night, it is important to consistently present each opportunity in a positive way. It may take a bit of time and patience, but when children find the fun in being active, fitness can become a part of everyday life.

When kids are active at a young age, the habit can last throughout their lifetime, and influencing kids to be active at an early age is no different than teaching them the golden rule or respecting their elders. So it's time to put fitness right up there with teaching children how to ride a bike and that there's no hiding a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk.

Mayor: Cops resisted Zimmerman 911 tape release

George Zimmerman's brother spoke out for the first time Thursday night, defending his brother's actions in the killing of unarmed Florida teen Trayvon Martin and saying that medical records will back his account of the shooting. NBC's Ron Allen reports.

SANFORD, Florida -- The mayor of the city where Trayvon Martin was killed says he overruled police and prosecutors who opposed the release of tapes of 911 calls, telling them: ?We're not here to hide anything.?

Jeff Triplett, who is a senior vice president at United Legacy Bank and part-time mayor of Sanford, said he took the decision after Martin?s family asked for the release of recordings of a call that shooter George Zimmerman made to police and 911 calls from neighbors who heard the confrontation.

Police, prosecutors and the city attorney opposed releasing the calls because of the ongoing investigation, Triplett told Reuters.

?Everyone was saying to me, no, no, no, don't turn them over," he said. "I just continually asked, 'Why wouldn't we do this?'"

"I made that call to try to settle everything down a little bit, to let the family hear what transpired. We were being accused of a lot of things, or the police department was, so we can take the step to say, 'We're not here to hide anything,'" Triplett added.

World is 'watching'
Triplett was governs a population of about 54,000, 30 percent of whom are black and have long complained bitterly about police mistreatment.

"I ran for office to make a better Sanford. And this comes on your plate, and it's just amazing," 43-year-old Triplett told Reuters in an interview.

"The decisions I'm trying to make, I could be not only held accountable for them from the city side but from the nation and the world that's watching right now," he added.

Martin's death?has drawn international attention, spurred protests in American cities and prompted a federal review.

George Zimmerman's brother said late on Thursday that medical records will prove that his brother was attacked and his nose was broken by Trayvon Martin before he fatally shot the teen.

Robert Zimmerman Jr. told CNN's Piers Morgan: "We're confident the medical records are going to explain all of George's medical history," he said.??

Controversy surrounding the case deepened Thursday when surveillance video footage of George Zimmerman being led from a police car shortly after he fatally shot Martin appeared not to show any obvious signs of injuries or bloodstains.

The footage, obtained by ABC News, shows a handcuffed Zimmerman getting out of the police car unaided and walking into the police station.

In the video, there are no readily visible signs of injuries to Zimmerman's head or blood on his clothes. However,?he is wearing a red jacket, which could obscure blood stains. Also, at one point, an officer pauses to look at the back of Zimmerman's head, which he claims was injured by Martin.

Triplett has had a mixed reaction: he has been booed off a stage, defended by black community leaders, and lectured on racial justice by civil rights activists.

He described how, on March 16, he invited Martin's family and lawyers to his office at City Hall to listen to the 911 calls prior to the public release. Natalie Jackson, an Orlando civil rights lawyer, was also present.

Martin's mother weeps
Triplett played the calls on his office computer. Someone was heard crying for help. Martin's mother wept and ran from the room, convinced it was her son, Jackson said. Everyone was moved to tears.

"It was very emotional," Triplett recalled. "Obviously when you hear something like that, there couldn't be anything worse for a family member or a parent ... and to hear your own son, what transpired at the last second."

Not everyone approves of Triplett's actions. Sanford City Commissioner Patty Mahany said she thought he meant well, but that he had drawn more attention to the case and the calls could influence jurors in any trial.

"I think it stirred up a lot of anger in very well-meaning people who still don't have the whole story," Mahany said.

Meanwhile, a college newspaper has apologized for publishing a cartoon about the Martin case after it received complaints, according to a report in the LA Times.

The editorial board of the University of Texas at Austin's Daily Texan said its decision to publish the cartoon ?showed a failure in judgment on the part of the editorial board?, adding that the cartoonist responsible, Stephanie Eisner, had left the paper.

Concerns over India rivers order

A supreme court order in India asking the government to link more than 30 rivers and divert waters to parched areas has sparked concerns in neighbouring countries.

Bangladesh says it would be hardest hit because it is a downstream country to two major rivers that flow from India.

New Delhi is yet to respond to the neighbouring countries' reactions.

The multi-billion-dollar project was announced by the Indian government in 2002 but had since remained on paper.

Experts in Nepal say the country's unstable political situation could open the door for India to build dams and reservoirs in Nepalese territory for the inter-linking project - known as the ILR.

Hydrologists say as an upstream country, Nepal has ideal locations for the infrastructure required to make the mammoth Indian project happen.

Bhutan too has similar locations and some of its rivers are tributaries to the Bramhaputra, a major river system in the region included in India's river-linking project.

Long-running disputes

The project's basic idea is to take water from areas where authorities believe it is abundant and divert it to areas where there is less available for irrigation, power and human consumption.

Official Indian documents have stated that the country - with its population of 1.2 billion - is increasingly water-stressed.

But when the government tried to present the ILR as a possible solution, it became quite controversial as critics argued it would have huge environmental consequences.

They also said it was unfeasible on technical grounds and that not all the states through which the rivers flow might allow waters to be diverted.

Some Indian states already have long-running water sharing disputes.

Delivering the court's order earlier this month, the judges said the project had long been delayed, resulting in an increase in cost.

Some 10 years ago, the super-ambitious scheme was billed at $120bn and was estimated that it would take 16 years to complete.

The court has also appointed a committee to plan and implement the project in a "time-bound manner".

Even before any of that began, Bangladesh was already quite critical of the idea.

"We can never agree to it," Ramesh Chandra Sen, Bangladeshi water resources minister told the BBC.

"Our agriculture, economy and our lives depend on these rivers, and we cannot imagine their waters being diverted."

Downstream impacts

The Ganges and the Bramhaputra, Asia's major river systems that flow down to Bangladesh, are among the rivers India has planned to divert to its western and southern parts.

Ainun Nishat, a Bangladeshi water resource expert, was even more critical.

"India assumes that these rivers stop at its borders and that there will be no downstream impacts to Bangladesh if it did anything to those resources," he said.

"They (India) have always thought that the Bramhaputra has a surplus water but they don't seem to remember that there is a sovereign country called Bangladesh downstream which has a need for water."

Minister Sen said there had been no official communication with his government on the project from the Indian side.

Nepal's Energy Minister Posta Bahadur Bogati too said he had not received any official information.

Senior Nepali water expert Santa Bahadur Pun said there were concerns that politicians might not be able to secure a good deal for allowing India to build dams and reservoirs in Nepalese territory.

"That is because we hear our leaders talking only about the stereotype hydropower development whereas they should be focusing on making India pay for the downstream benefits it would be getting from its river-linking infrastructures in Nepal."

Such concerns also stem from the fact that some think Nepalese politicians are too preoccupied with the prolonged peace process that India mediated after a 10-year Maoist insurgency.

Bhutan says it has not been apprised of the project idea.

"While we recognise rivers as a trans-boundary issue, there has been no direct dialogue as far as building structures in Bhutan for the project (of India) is concerned," Bhutanese Minister for Agriculture and Forests Pema Gyamtsho told the BBC.

'Conceptual stage'

Media reports and academic papers apart, little has come out officially about the inter-river linking project.

In 2006, the Indian water resources minister at the time gave a brief response in the parliament when asked if there would be a white paper on the project.

"The ILR project is still at a conceptual stage only and all the far-reaching effects of the link projects can be analysed at the stage of preparation of detailed projects.

"As such, there is no need to release a white paper on the ILR at this stage."

Indian water resources ministry officials made no comment to the BBC's query how India took its neighbours' reactions to the recent supreme court's order to implement the river linking project.

Many of India's past water treaties and agreements with neighbouring countries Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan have been mired in disputes.

And now New Delhi has had to worry about China's plans to divert its southern rivers to the north, analysts say.

The main concern has been proposed Chinese hydro-electric plants on Tibet's Yarlung-Tsampo river that becomes the Bramhaputra in India, although Beijing has said it does not intend to divert its waters.

A number of studies have shown South Asia as one of the flashpoints over water resources in the future, particularly in the wake of climate change and a burgeoning population.

A recent assessment by the US intelligence agencies has said beyond 2022, South Asia will be one of the regions in the world where "water would be used as a weapon of war or a tool of terrorism".

On Barbie?s 50th Anniversary in 2009, 90% of girls in America ages 3-10 owned at least one Barbie doll, and around three Barbie dolls are sold worldwide every second.? Yet, Barbie is one toy in-particular that people have polarised views on.? Critics say she promotes an unhealthy body image and frivolous spending, but others say that she evolves along with cultural changes and presents a strong role model for children.

The question remains over why boys and girls are attracted to different toys targeted towards their gender ? but this is down to what toys they are given to play with.? Young children aren?t aware of toys being targeted towards gender ? so can they really be aware of any negative gender-stereotypical that may or may not be attached?

Gender differences are the result of primary socialisation and the media, not specific toys.? Just because you buy your daughter a princess toy doesn?t mean she will grow up passive and reliant on a male to come and rescue her for her to bake cakes for. After all, it?s just a toy.? These doubts ? such as Barbie promoting spending over saving with her numerous outfits ? have materialised from adults, not children. Children aren?t old enough to understand the labels and perceptions that exist over gender. Barbie might have a wardrobe full of clothes, but this doesn?t mean your child will grow up having shopping as her only life goal.

The releases of new Barbie dolls have coincided with changes in the social and political climates, reflecting an evolution in female identity throughout the past half century.? Barbie progresses alongside social and political changes ? new editions reflect changes in the construction of female identity.? World News - US: North Korea using hackers; food aid suspended ...

WASHINGTON -- North Korea has added sophisticated cyber attack capabilities to its arsenal of threatening weapons and this year is rife with opportunities for military provocations from Pyongyang, senior U.S. defense officials said on Wednesday.

The officials told the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee that North Korea's large conventional military, nuclear weapons programs, ballistic missiles and newer capabilities in cyber warfare were all threats to the United States and its allies in the Asia-Pacific region.

Army Gen. James Thurman, the commander of U.S. Forces Korea, told the panel that a skilled team of hackers was the newest addition to North Korea's arsenal of weapons that also includes chemical and biological weapons.

"Such attacks are ideal for North Korea, providing the regime a means to attack South Korean and U.S. interests without attribution, and have been increasingly employed against a variety of targets including military, governmental, educational and commercial institutions," he said in prepared comments.

Thurman, who leads the 28,000 U.S. troops in South Korea, told the panel that the power transfer following the death in December of leader Kim Jong Il "appears to be proceeding without discernible internal challenges and with significant Chinese political and economic support."

Kim's untested son, Kim Jong Un, estimated to be 28 years old, has eased into power surrounded by allies of his father with so far "no indications the regime will depart significantly from Kim Jong Il's policies," said Thurman.

Peter Lavoy, acting assistant secretary of defense for Asia and Pacific Security Affairs, told the panel the potential for provocations from North Korea in 2012 was a "major concern" of the Pentagon.

From the U.S. perspective, the first provocation will be a North Korean ballistic missile launch slated for between April 12-16. But South Korean elections in April and December might also tempt Pyongyang to take actions to influence Seoul's domestic politics, he said.

Pyongyang says the rocket to be launched to mark what would have been the 100th birthday of deceased state founder Kim Il Sung will carry a weather satellite into orbit. But most outsiders say it is a disguised test of a long-range missile that violates key U.N. Security Council resolutions that ban any such launches.

Food aid suspended
"This planned launch is highly provocative because it manifests North Korea's desire to test and expand its long-range missile capability," said Lavoy. He said the announcement of the launch also broke a missile moratorium North Korea agreed to on Feb. 29 with Washington in exchange for food aid.

According to the BBC, Lavoy said next month's planned rocket launch "reflects [North Korea's] lack of desire to follow through on their international commitments and so we've been forced to suspend our activities to provide nutritional assistance."

The US has not delivered food aid to North Korea since 2009, BBC reported, but it sent officials to the country's ally China earlier this month to finalize plans for renewed food deliveries totaling 240,000 tons.

North Korea relies on foreign aid to feed its people, BBC reported. The country has been struggling with food shortages since a famine in the 1990s.

Many of North Korea's neighbors are concerned about next month's launch of a rocket, which North Korea has said would travel southward toward the Philippines or Indonesia, said Lavoy.

"I don't know if we have any confidence on the stability of the missile or what the impact will be," he said.

The missile launch next month has put on hold diplomatic efforts to coax North Korea back into talks over its nuclear weapons programs that have been frozen for three years.

The Battle For the Bialystoker: More Community Perspectives | The ...

Last week,? we filed a brief report after Community Board 3?s landmarks subcommittee voted in favor of protecting the Bialystoker Nursing Home building, at 228 East Broadway.? Today ? a more detailed account from the public hearing, which offered the most detailed explanation yet from nursing home board members about their decision to close the Lower East Side institution after 80 years and to sell the building as a development site.

Shortly after the home closed last year, preservationists filed an application with the city to designate the 1929 Beaux Arts building an historic landmark.? The nursing home board opposed this move, arguing that landmarking would scare off prospective buyers.? The Landmarks Preservation Commission has not announced whether it intends to ?calendar? the application and schedule a public hearing on the matter.? Community activists hoped an endorsement from the CB3 would compel the commission to act.

Last Tuesday evening, the nursing home?s public relations firm (Geto & deMilly) handed out a statement from the board of trustees spelling out its position.? The statement made the argument that landmarking would deprive the nursing home?s union and other creditors of millions of dollars they are owed:

As part of its state-approved closure plan, the Bialystoker Board is now attempting to raise the $13+ million in capital that will allow it to honor its obligations to the nursing home?s 115 loyal employees with respect to past due wages, benefits and pension funding. It is also the Board?s goal to reimburse our vendors, many of which are local businesses, as well as remit remaining taxes and funds owed to Medicaid. These obligations have real-life implications for the working families depending on this compensation, and for local businesses that cannot afford such a loss. However, the $13+ million needed to make good on these obligations can only come from the sale of the site? The Bialystoker Board is now in the process of entering into a contract of sale to the highest bidder. The sale has been approved by the Attorney General? If this building were to be designated a landmark, options for its adaptive reuse would be severely limited (due to its narrow configuration and advanced disrepair)? Thus it could only be sold at a significant discount, which would likely thrust Bialystoker into bankruptcy and ensure that our deserving employees will not receive the full amount of compensation owed to them.

Preservationists in attendance countered the nursing home?s arguments from a variety of perspectives. First off, they said it?s shortsighted to tear down a building that not only has architectural significance but is also symbolic of the Jewish experience on the Lower East Side. Elissa Sampson, a longtime LES resident, argued that the Bialystoker building is ?representative of immigrant labor in every sense.?? Immigrant workers (almost all of whom worked in the garment industry) paid $10 per brick to build the home.

Mitchell Grubler, a leader of Friends of the Bialystoker Home,? detailed several government programs that could be used to help pay for the building?s renovation and made the case that preservation does not necessarily mean financial ruin.? Eric Mandelbaum, the president of the neighboring Seward park Cooperative, also spoke in favor of saving the building (he was speaking only for himself, not the co-op board).

Leah Gonzalez,? representing the union, 1199 SEIU Healthcare Workers East, acknowledged that? the Bialystoker ?is clearly a beloved building.? But she went on to urge community board members to ?give serious consideration to the impact (on preservation) on our workers, all of whom are unemployed (several months after the nursing home?s closure).?? Gonzalez said the union is owed about $4 million in back wages and benefits. In opposing preservation, she said, ?we are not left with a lot of options.?

At least two Bialystoker board members were present at the meeting, including Gary Ambrose, who offered a detailed account of the home?s financial woes.? The closure, he said, ?broke my heart.?? Ten years ago, he indicated, the board was advised to close the home, but they were determined to keep it going.? In the end, he told CB3 members, the Bialystoker was losing $1 million a month.?? The building had become dangerous to both residents and employees.? Ambrose said an intensive search was begun for a ?white knight,? but no one would touch it? if the building was landmarked. He estimated that the winning bid was around $17 million.? Alys Kremer, another longtime board member, implored the community board not to ?put buildings before people.? She added, ?I urge you to be unsentimental about this.?

Preservationists have often pointed to the Bialystoker?s facade, which includes etchings depicting the Twelve Tribes of Israel. The Nursing home board has suggested these and other design elements could be removed and preserved before the building is demolished.? But David Adams, a Community Board member and observant Jew, argued that people are making too much of the Bialystoker?s historic significance.

?It?s not that significant or unique,? he said. Adams elaborated, suggesting that it?s better to ?live in the present day,? adding that ?making monuments to the past is not what we?re about.? We?re about the future.?? Adams also suggested the nursing home board members, who he said ?come from my community,? explored every possibility.

In the end, Adams was the only community board member to vote against the resolution, which called on the Landmarks Commission to ?promptly calendar and landmark the Bialystoker Nursing Home building.?? Next month, CB3?s Parks Committee will vote on the resolution before its forwarded to the full board at the end of April.

As we reported last week, the State Attorney General?s office would not confirm it has approved the sale of the Bialystoker. Nursing home representatives did not indicate whether the real estate contract gives the prospective buyer an ?out? if the building is landmarked in the weeks or months ahead.?? Other parties ? who are thinking in terms of renovating the Bialystoker rather than demolishing it ? are waiting in the wings. They have, however, made it clear they could not pay ?top dollar? for a building that has landmark status and would require millions to rehab. One non-profit organization, Two Bridges Neighborhood Council, tried to contact representatives of the Bialystoker about possibly creating affordable housing in the building.? Their overtures were rebuffed.

City Council member Margaret Chin has been in contact with both preservationists and the Bialystoker board, in an effort to find a solution to the dilemma. State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has declined to weigh on on the issue, but has told community activists that he might take a position if the community board passes its resolution next month.

Health Canada Warns on Avodart Prostate Cancer: AttorneyOne ...

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) March 27, 2012--The media spotlight is often a double-edged sword. No one knows this better than men who suffer from Avodart severe adverse events. And yet, gossip and rumor-mongering aside, the real story here is being overlooked according to Sean Burke of AttorneyOne.

On March 19th, 2012 Health Canada issued a warning about Avodart, and other drugs used to treat enlarged prostate, that they may be associated with an increased risk of developing a serious form of prostate cancer known as high-grade prostate cancer, an aggressive type of prostate cancer. The new safety information is based on Health Canada's review of the two large international clinical trials: Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial (PCPT) and the Reduction by Dutasteride of Prostate Cancer Events (REDUCE) trial. These trials showed that the long-term daily use (over four years) of dutasteride (Avodart) in men aged 50 years and older was associated with a small but statistically significant increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer.

Avodart (dutasteride), manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, was approved by the FDA in October 2002 for the treatment of urinary problems. The medication, in use for men only, helps improve urinary flow and may also reduce the need for prostate surgery. Avodart belongs to a class of drugs known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (5-ARI). In June 2010, the FDA warned that 5-ARI drugs must carry warning labels alerting patients to the possible risk of developing high-grade prostate cancer.

In April 2010, the New England Journal of Medicine published a study revealing an unexpected spike in the number of Avodart users who developed heart failure after taking the medication.

Fertility and Breast Cancer | Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer

I think that one of the greatest challenges of having breast cancer in my 20s is the issue of fertility. I was never one of those girls who dreamed of being a wife and mother. I was more focused on finding a career I loved and having fun with my friends. In my teens, I was convinced I would never have children and then when I was in my early 20s, it definitely wasn?t a priority. Because I was diagnosed around the same time I met my now husband, the decision about whether or not to have children is very confusing.

Since there are so few cases of breast cancer in women young enough to have not yet had children, the data on whether pregnancy can increase risk of recurrence is inconclusive, at least according to my oncologists. Logically, it would seem to me that since I had an estrogen-receptor positive tumor, pregnancy would not be the wisest choice. I also chose to freeze my eggs before chemotherapy, just in case, so I could always choose to have a surrogate carry my baby. And of course, there is always adoption.

Marc and I don?t know if we want to have children. We?ve been married a year and a half, and are in our early 30s. If I hadn?t had breast cancer, I don?t think I would stress about this. We could decide in a year or two (or five) to try to start a family. However, under these circumstances, it seems like the choice is so much harder. Neither of us is particularly comfortable with the idea of my carrying a pregnancy because of the perceived risk of recurrence. This is in addition to the fibroid issue I have, and also the fact that I am on tamoxifen and would have to wait two more years at least before getting pregnant to avoid birth defects caused by this drug.

For adoption, and even surrogacy, planning is important and long wait time is to be expected. I feel like I would need to decide right now to start the process of adoption or surrogacy to be a parent within five years. Obviously there are never any guarantees with natural conception, but these factors make the process seem tedious and exhausting for both my husband and I. And there is also the financial burden of adoption and surrogacy. We wonder if our circumstances were different if we would think differently about having children, or if our hesitation would have been there anyway. We can?t know of course, and I am left feeling unsure and confused. As Scarlett O?Hara would say, I?ll think about?that tomorrow.

However, we are taught by our society to admire individuals with confidence, braveness and a positive attitude. The socially intrepid have a tendency to gain respect and, yes?wealth. Aggressive personalities from P.T. Barnum to Richard Branson are held up as requirements of success. Even ?The Donald? gets grudging admiration from people who do not like him. How many instances have you heard ?Personally, I can?t stand the guy, but you have to admire his chutzpah.? or phrases to that effect.

In case you are a type of people who takes consolation in fitting in, or who facilitates social interplay by using a measure of modesty, stop it proper now (a minimum of in your job looking position). Average tax refund so far: about $3,000

The IRS has already handed out tens of millions of income tax refunds, and the average refund amount is about?$3,000.

IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman told a House subcommittee Thursday that the IRS had received more than 70 million individual tax returns as of March 10, up about 5 percent from the same time last year.

Shulman said the IRS had issued 59.2 million refunds as of March 10, for a total of $174 billion.

The $3,000 refunds are about the same as last year, according to Shulman?s testimony before a Ways and Means subcommittee.

If you?re more of a procrastinator than an early bird, don?t worry: You still have some time. The tax due?datehas been extended to April 17 this year.

French police ready to storm building for suspect

TOULOUSE, France (AP) ? French police were preparing to storm an apartment building in Toulouse on Wednesday to arrest a holed-up gunman who is suspected in seven killings and claiming allegiance to al-Qaida, a top police official said.

Three officers were wounded in a predawn raid while trying to arrest the 24-year-old Frenchman of Algerian descent who authorities said had spent time in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Hundreds of riot police have surrounded the building in the southwestern city.

Cedric Delage, regional secretary for a police union, said the suspect has promised to turn himself into police shortly. Delage said if that doesn't happen, police will force their way in.

The gunman is suspected of killing three Jewish children, a rabbi and three French paratroopers in recent days.

The suspect has told police he belonged to al-Qaida and wanted to take revenge for Palestinian children killed in the Middle East, Interior Minister Claude Gueant said, adding the man was also angry about French military intervention abroad.

An Interior Ministry official identified the suspect as Mohamed or Mohammad Merah, who has been under surveillance for years for having "fundamentalist" views. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

After hours of trying to persuade him to surrender, police evacuated the five-story building, escorting residents out using the roof and fire truck ladders.

The raid was part of France's biggest manhunt since a wave of terrorist attacks in the 1990s by Algerian extremists. The chase began after France's worst-ever school shooting Monday and two previous attacks on paratroopers, killings that have horrified the country and frozen the campaigning for the French presidential election starting next month.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has said a "monster" was on the loose in France and vowed to track him down. Sarkozy has played up nationalist themes in his bid for a second term.

French authorities said the suspect threw a Colt .45 handgun used in each of the three attacks out a window in exchange for a device to talk to authorities, but has more weapons like an AK-47 assault rifle. Gueant said other weapons had been found in the suspect's car.

The suspect "said he wants to avenge the deaths of Palestinians," Gueant told reporters, adding that he is "less explicit" about why he killed French paratroopers. The paratroopers were of Muslim and French Caribbean origin, but the interior minister said the suspect told them the ethnic origin has nothing to do with his actions.

"He's after the army," Gueant said.

There was some confusion over the suspect's background, because a person of the same name was arrested in southern Afghanistan five years ago and escaped from his prison cell in Kandahar province in a 2008 mass jailbreak, according to Kandahar provincial spokesman Ahmad Jawed Faisal. However, Faisal says their records also show that Merah was an Afghan citizen from Kandahar province.

In neighboring Germany, which regularly tracks extremists who head to Afghanistan or Pakistan for paramilitary training, a senior intelligence official told the AP that he had never seen the name "Mohammad Merah" come up. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorize to discuss the issue.

Police swept in soon after 3 a.m. (0200 GMT; 10 p.m. EDT Tuesday) on the residential neighborhood in Toulouse where the suspect was holed up. At one point, volleys of gunfire were exchanged.

The suspect promised several times to surrender in the afternoon, then stopped talking to negotiators, Gueant said. In the early afternoon, he resumed talking, a police official said.

"Terrorism will not be able to fracture our national community," Sarkozy declared Wednesday on national television before heading to the funeral services for two paratroopers killed and another injured in nearby Montauban. He later traveled to Toulouse.

The series of attacks ? every four days since March 11 ? began with the killing of another paratrooper in Toulouse.

"The main concern is to arrest him, and to arrest him in conditions by which we can present him to judicial officials," Gueant said, explaining authorities want to "take him alive ... It is imperative for us."

A judicial official said the suspect's mother, brother and a companion of the brother were detained for questioning. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly.

Gueant said the suspect's brother "is also engaged in the Salafi ideology," a reference to a fundamentalist interpretation of Islam.

The building where the raid is taking place dates from the 1960s. The suspect's apartment is on the ground floor, said Eric Lambert, whose son lives in the building. Lambert said the suspect helped his son move into the building a few months ago.

Delage said a key to tracking the suspect was the powerful Yamaha motorcycle that he has used in all three attacks ? a dark gray one that had been stolen March 6. The frame was painted white, the color witnesses saw in the school attack.

According to Delage, one of the suspect's brothers went to a motorcycle sales outfit to ask how to modify the GPS tracker, raising suspicions. The vendor then contacted police, Delage said.

The shooter has proved to be a meticulous operator. At the site of the second paratrooper killing, police found the clip for the gun used in all three attacks ? but no fingerprints or DNA on it.

The first French paratrooper killed was shot March 11 after posting an announcement online to sell his motorcycle and investigators believe the gunman responded and lured the paratrooper into an isolated place to kill him.

The schoolchildren killed, all of French-Israeli nationality, were buried in Israel on Wednesday as relatives sobbed inconsolably. The bodies of Rabbi Jonathan Sandler, his sons Arieh, 5, and Gabriel, 3, and 8-year-old Myriam Monsenego had been flown there in the day.

At the funeral ceremony in Jerusalem, Myriam's eldest brother, Avishai, in his 20s, wailed and called to God to give his parents the strength "to endure the worst trial that can be endured."

In the name of the four remaining Monsenego children, he urged his father and mother to "keep going, keep going, keep going."

Meanwhile, Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad denounced the deadly shooting attack and condemned the link to Palestinian children.

"It's time for criminals to stop using the Palestinian cause to justify their terrorist actions," Fayyad said in a statement. "The children of Palestine want nothing but dignified lives for themselves and for all the children."
