How your phone's screen shatters

5 hrs.

You?ll know when it?s over.

Upon impact, a small amount of elastic energy is converted into acoustic energy ? that resounding indication of breaking glass. But the majority of the elastic energy stored in the glass will be converted into two ? or more ? new surface energies. A crack. Or several cracks. With one eye closed, you?ll reach down gingerly, reluctant to turn it over. There won't be any shards to pick up off the pavement, only a phone with a freshly splintered screen, the jagged lines and spiderwebs forming some kind of painful abstract art.

You've just smashed your phone's screen.

The glass layered on the front of your phone is a lot of things: thin, flexible, transparent. But the only two things that matter when you drop it are its hardness and its strength. Hardness is resistance to abrasion. It?s your screen?s first line of defense against car keys, kitchen tables and concrete. Strength is the relationship between the surface compression and inner tension; it determines, among other things, how many blows a piece of glass can endure before it shatters completely. Glass only breaks in tension, when the force of impact finally overcomes the surface compression. A scratch doesn?t shatter glass, but small stresses will eventually lead to a colossal splintering.

Your phone is in fact covered with some very hard, very strong glass that's only 0.8 mm thick. Yet it takes 30 times more force to scratch the iPhone screen than it does a piece of plastic,?according to Apple. And under perfect conditions, the latest chemically tempered?Corning Gorilla Glass?? which is more likely than not covering the front of the new phone in your pocket ? can withstand around 100,000 pounds of pressure per square inch. Or in English, a 1.18-pound iron ball dropped from six feet.

Building glass that tough is an arduous process. A 400-degree Celsius bath of molten salt replaces the small sodium ions ? the tiny particles that make up?aluminosilicate sheet glass?? with larger potassium ones that ?stuff? themselves onto the surface, for increased compression. This makes the glass harder and more resistant to deeper scratches. Jets of cold air are then blown across the top of the glass, which allows the outside to cool and harden faster than the inside, giving it lots of compression on the surface, but tension in the middle. The push and pull between the two is what makes tempered glass so strong.

If your phone had belly flopped onto the ground, landing completely parallel to a flat surface, you'd have been a little luckier, because the stress of impact would've been spread across the entire surface. It would've emerged weaker, sicker, one blow closer to death, but unscathed to the naked eye. It would still feel smooth beneath your fingers.

But the uneven surface meant that the point of contact between the glass and ground was small and focused, directing the entire force of the impact onto one small point. And the screen had already been nicked by keys and pocketfuls of change, dinged by months of being tossed onto tables and countertops. Each tiny scratch moved the material apart at a microscopic level, almost like a piece of fabric slowly tearing, creating a shallow crevice at the surface. With every fresh trauma, those invisible crevices grew deeper. Sharper. The process accelerates over time. The flaw propagates. It grows and grows, until eventually it becomes visible and leaves you with two new adjacent surfaces: a crack.

The crack moves perpendicular to that initial surface scratch, racing to break the tension that holds your screen together from the center. Finally, it shatters. The phone simply slipped, so glass shards didn't eject themselves like thousands of fighter pilots upon the sudden release of pent up elastic energy. No, there's just a zig-zag spiderweb imprinted on the screen, one that you can clearly see but only sort of feel, like a quasi-3-D etching. No other glass dies like this ? it's a strange pattern that's unique to tempered glass, which is doing its job, reducing jagged edges that would render your texting days over. The glass, sandwiched between a thin coating, digitizer and display, is shattered, but it doesn't move.

It's impossible to determine the exact strength of a piece of glass, and there is no such thing as a flawless one. In the process of strengthening, imperfections are inevitable. For these reasons, we don?t know the exact force or number of incidental drops that our phones can survive;?some say four spills?is all it takes. Like people, each screen?s resilience is different. Some of us can withstand years of small scratches at the surface ? for others, one big fall is enough to break us.

Special thanks to?Dr. Arun K. Varshneya of Saxon Glass?for help with this story.

OnLive's alternative to bankruptcy just what is an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors

The news is out. OnLive, Inc. is no more, having cut the bulk of its workforce loose and used an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors (ABC) to absolve itself of massive debts incurred by the expansion of its services without a corresponding increase in its customer base. But what is this alternative to filing for bankruptcy, and why did OnLive choose this particular legal reset button to start over? We spoke with an expert on the matter, Martin Pichinson, co-founder and managing member of Sherwood Partners (which does two or three ABCs in a given week), to help educate us on this little-known tool used by companies irrevocably in the red.

The Times' college football countdown: No. 12 West Virginia

The Big 12 is thrilled to welcome in West Virginia and is betting the Mountaineers fit like a cork in a jug.

The Big East demanded $20 million in early-exit fees from West Virginia as it reminded everyone the school's early nickname was "the Snakes."

Conference realignment has become a combat sport, but out of the Shenandoah Valley this too shall pass.

The Big East named a new commissioner this week as it tries to regain its bearings.

West Virginia hired a new travel agent as it readies for trips to Lubbock, Stillwater and Ames.

The Big 12 bought West Virginia stock at just the right time, with the Mountaineers coming off a 70-33 win over Clemson in the Orange Bowl.

West Virginia brings its hyperactive offense to a conference that has been playing defense of late only because the rules require it.

Check out these final 2011 national Big 12 defensive rankings: Baylor (116), Iowa State (95), Kansas (120), Kansas State (72), Oklahoma State (107), Texas Tech (114) and Oklahoma (55).

A lot of those inflated numbers can be attributed to the spread of spread offenses and won't get better with West Virginia returning most key starters from a team that averaged 37.6 points per game.

Though the conference switch will require a time-zone adjustment, West Virginia's coaching staff is quite familiar with Big 12 territory.

Second-year Mountaineers Coach Dana Holgorsen spent the better part of a decade in the Big 12 as an assistant at Texas Tech and Oklahoma State.

Holgorsen's new defensive coordinator, Joe DeForest, spent the last 10 years at Oklahoma State.

Yes, Holgorsen said, there will be longer trips, but this isn't NBA travel, either.

"It's going to be an airplane ride," Holgorsen said. "So you're going to jump on a plane and fly a couple of hours no mater where you go. From there it's just all about routine."

West Virginia has a chance to compete immediately.

The Big 12 lost a lot of firepower with the departures of NFL draft-pick quarterbacks Robert Griffin III (Baylor) and Brandon Weeden (Oklahoma State). Missouri quarterback James Franklin left, along with the rest of his team, to the Southeastern Conference.

West Virginia senior Geno Smith should move right to the top shelf of Big 12 quarterbacks, coming off a year in which he set the school's single-season record with 4,385 yards.

Smith, you may recall, blistered LSU's vaunted secondary last year for 463 yards in defeat at Morgantown.

West Virginia also returns top receivers Stedman Bailey, Tavon Austin and most of the offensive line.

Defense?

Yes, the Mountaineers will have to play some, although Oklahoma State nearly got into the national title game last year with a unit that didn't crack the nation's top 100.

Oklahoma State countered the huge yardage giveaway with a plus-21 turnover margin, so look for new coordinator DeForest to try to bring that strip-the-ball mind-set to the Mountaineers defense.

The countdown so far: The countdown so far: 25. Notre Dame; 24. Texas Christian; 23. Utah; 22. Kansas State; 21. Louisville; 20. Boise State; 19. Clemson; 18. Stanford; 17. Michigan State; 16. Oklahoma State; 15. Wisconsin; 14. Nebraska; 13. Arkansas; 12. West Virginia.

Bluetooth Bulb lets you switch on, time, dim and color your lighting with your phone video

Every once in a while, someone tries to give the humble light bulb a little next-gen flavor. This time, we're adding Bluetooth 4.0 to the mix. Why, you ask? Good question, and one with a simple answer. The Bluetooth Bulb lets you pair your phone with one or more of the lights in your home, and then control them via an app. Switch them on, off, change brightness, set a timer, and a special RGB bulb even lets you change the color ambiance. If you're worried about the cost and waste when these things burn out, fear not, as apparently every part is replaceable -- and as there's no home automation system involved -- you won't need anything else to get set up. If this idea switches you on, you might have to hold out a little longer, as the product is just a patented prototype right now. Sights are set on mass production, but you'll have to stick with your old clapper for the time being.

(AP) ? Animal rights campaigners are calling for an end to the famed Palio bareback horse race in Siena after six of 10 horses crashed during the latest edition.

The LAV animal rights group said Friday the accident on the first curve of the dirt-covered course in Siena's main square was just the "umpteenth confirmation that the Palio needs to put the safety of the horses and all the participants ahead of tradition."

One of the horses broke a front leg in the collision on Thursday. Critics have long held the race, a fierce competition among the Tuscan city's quarters, should be held without animals. Horses frequently fall, collide, or are trampled during the race, and some 50 have died since 1970.

The Palio is held each July and August.

Two new owl species discovered in the Philippines

ScienceDaily (Aug. 17, 2012) ? Two new species of owls have been discovered in the Philippines, and a Michigan State University researcher played a key role in confirming their existence.

The discovery, which is featured in the current issue of Forktail, the Journal of Asian Ornithology, took years to confirm, but it was well worth the effort, said the paper's lead author Pam Rasmussen, MSU assistant professor of zoology and assistant curator of mammalogy and ornithology at the MSU Museum.

"More than 15 years ago, we realized that new subspecies of Ninox hawk-owls existed in the Philippines," she said. "But it wasn't until last year that we obtained enough recordings that we could confirm that they were not just subspecies, but two new species of owls."

Announcing the finding of a single bird is rare enough. But the discovery of two new bird species in a single paper is so rare that Rasmussen and the other researchers couldn't recall the last time it happened.

The first owl, the Camiguin Hawk-owl, is found only on the small island of Camiguin Sur, close to northern Mindanao. Despite being so close geographically to related owls on Mindanao, it has quite different physical characteristics and voice. At night, it gives a long solo song that builds in intensity, with a distinctive low growling tone. Pairs of owls give short barking duets that start with a growl. They also are the only owls to have blue-gray eyes.

The second new discovery was the Cebu Hawk-owl. This bird was thought to be extinct, as the forests of Cebu have almost all been lost due to deforestation. But it had never been considered a distinct form. Study of its structure and vocalizations confirmed that it was a new species. In fact, it was the unique calling or vocalizations of both owls that confirmed that the new classifications were warranted.

"The owls don't learn their songs, which are genetically programmed in their DNA and are used to attract mates or defend their territory; so if they're very different, they must be new species," Rasmussen said. "When we first heard the songs of both owls, we were amazed because they were so distinctly different that we realized they were new species."

The owls have avoided recognition as distinct species for so long because the group shows complex variation in appearance that had been poorly studied, and their songs were unknown. Both islands are off the beaten path for ornithologists and birders, who usually visit the larger islands that host more bird species.

Sound recordings of both new owl species and those from other islands are available free on AVoCet.

Since the discovery process is both tedious and time consuming, it took a team of scientists and contributors to confirm the owls' existence. The team included individuals from BirdLife International, the Oriental Bird Club, Philippines Biodiversity Conservation Foundation Inc. and Birdtour Asia. Additional support was provided by National Geographic.

Securing Syria Chemical Weapons May Take Tens Of Thousands Of Troops

The U.S. Army

A U.S. Army soldier during a training mission near Camp Ramadi, Iraq, Sept. 25, 2007.

The United States and its allies are discussing a worst-case scenario that could require tens of thousands of ground troops to go into Syria to secure chemical and biological weapons sites following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad's government, according to U.S. and diplomatic officials.

These secret discussions assume that all of Assad's security forces disintegrate, leaving chemical and biological weapons sites in Syria vulnerable to pillaging. The scenario also assumes these sites could not be secured or destroyed solely through aerial bombings, given health and environmental risks.

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity to explain the sensitive discussions, said the United States still had no plans to put boots on the ground in Syria. President Barack Obama's administration has, in fact, so far refused to provide lethal support to the rebels fighting to oust Assad's regime and the Pentagon has played down the possibility of implementing a no-fly zone anytime soon.

"There is not a imminent plan to deploy ground forces. This is, in fact, a worst-case scenario," the official said, adding U.S. forces would likely play a role in such a mission.

Two diplomatic sources, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said as many as 50,000 or 60,000 ground forces may be needed if officials' worst fears are realized, plus additional support forces.

Even a force of 60,000 troops, however, would not be large enough for peacekeeping and would only be the amount required to secure the weapons sites - despite some of the appearances of a Iraq-style occupation force, the diplomatic sources cautioned.

It is unclear at this stage how such a military mission would be organized and which nations might participate. But some European allies have indicated they are unlikely to join, the sources said.

The White House declined comment on specific contingency plans. Spokesman Tommy Vietor said that while the U.S. government believes the chemical weapons are under the Syrian government's control, "Given the escalation of violence in Syria, and the regime's increasing attacks on the Syrian people, we remain very concerned about these weapons.

"In addition to monitoring their stockpiles, we are actively consulting with Syria's neighbors - and our friends in the international community - to underscore our common concern about the security of these weapons, and the Syrian government's obligation to secure them," Vietor said.

The Pentagon declined to comment.

POTENTIALLY DOZENS OF SITES

While there is no complete accounting of Syria's unconventional weapons, it is widely believed to have stockpiles of nerve agents such as VX, sarin and tabun.

The U.S. official said there were potentially dozens of chemical and biological weapons sites scattered around the country.

Securing them could not be left to an aerial bombing, which could lead to the dispersion of those agents, the official said.

"There could be second-order effects that could be extremely problematic," the official said of aerial bombing.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last month that it was important that Syrian security forces be held together when Assad is forced from power, citing, in particular, their ability to secure chemical weapons sites.

"They do a pretty good job of securing those sites," Panetta said in an interview with CNN in July. "If they suddenly walked away from that, it would be a disaster to have those chemical weapons fall into the wrong hands, hands of Hezbollah or other extremists in that area."

The United States, Israel and Western powers have been discussing the nightmarish possibility that some of Assad's chemical weapons could make their way to militant groups - al-Qaeda style Sunni Jihadi insurgents or pro-Iranian Shi'ite Lebanese fighters from Hezbollah.

Some Western intelligence sources suggested that Hezbollah and Iran's Revolutionary Guards, both close allies of Syria, might try to get hold of the chemical weapons in the case of a total collapse of government authority.

Syria began to acquire the ability to develop and produce chemical weapons agents in 1973, including mustard gas and sarin, and possibly also VX nerve agent.

Precise quantities and configurations of chemical weapons in the Syrian stockpile are not known. However, the CIA has estimated that Syria possesses several hundred liters of chemical weapons and produces hundreds of tonnes of agents annually.

The Global Security website, which collects published intelligence reports and other data, says there are several suspected chemical weapons facilities in Syria.

Analysts have also identified the town of Cerin, on the coast, as a possible production site for biological weapons.

HBT: Nationals looking pretty scary right now

I?m loathe to ever say a team ?made a statement.? There are a lot of damn baseball games, see, so no ?statement? can last much more than 24 hours. For example, if the Giants come back and kick the poop out of the Nats tonight and tomorrow afternoon, that statement would be something like ?pardon me, I seem to have stepped on your toe, oh, don?t get up ? OW!! Stop Kicking me!?

That said, the Nats sort of made a statement last night.

In a possible playoff preview, Washington destroyed San Francisco, 14-2, batting the NL?s ERA leader Ryan Vogelsong for eight runs on nine hits in two and a two-thirds.?The Nats led 14-0 after five. Their 21 hits were the most ever for an opponent at AT&T Park.

Overall, the Nats? dominance is becoming clear. The win was their 11th in 13 games. On this current road trip they are 7-1. They have baseball?s best record, its second largest division lead and its best run differential. Since the All-Star break they have also scored more runs than anyone.

They look pretty good, on the whole, against NL contenders as well. ?On the season they are 8-4 against the Braves, their closest division rival. They are 5-2 against Cincinnati. They?ve beaten the Giants, soundly, in all four games they?ve played. They?ve taken four of six from the Dbacks. The Dodgers have handled them, however and they?ve lost three of five to the Pirates. They?ve yet to play the Cardinals.

Obviously the playoffs are a different beast ? and I still think the decision to go voluntarily bench Stephen Strasburg in October will haunt them ? but at the moment everything is coming up Nationals.

Online obesity treatment programmes show promise

ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2012) ? Computer and web-based weight management programmes may provide a cost effective way of addressing the growing problem of obesity, according to a team of seven researchers who undertook a Cochrane systematic review. The researchers, from Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, USA, found that delivering weight loss or weight maintenance programmes online or by computer helped overweight and obese patients lose and/or maintain weight.

Being overweight or obese can increase a person?s risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and other chronic medical conditions. The World Health Organization predicts that the number of obese and overweight people in the world will reach 1.5 billion by 2015. Computer or internet-based weight management programmes may be a cost-effective approach to treating overweight or obese people, with the potential to have a major impact on public health.

The review focuses on 14 studies of weight loss involving a total of 2,537 people and four weight maintenance studies involving a further 1,603 people. Those who took part were selected based on having a body mass index (BMI) over a certain limit. In weight loss studies, participants lost more weight after six months than those receiving no intervention or minimal interventions, but less than those who received treatment face-to-face. Similarly, participants who took part in weight maintenance studies were more successful at keeping off weight than those receiving no or minimal interventions, but less so than those receiving face-to-face treatment. Minimal interventions included handing out pamphlets or providing usual care.

L. Susan Wieland, PhD, based at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, US, was the lead author of the study. ?Computer or web-based weight management programmes may be less beneficial than face-to-face interventions, but health care providers have limited opportunities to provide this care, so lower impact treatment approaches need to be considered,? said Wieland.

?These large-scale systematic reviews are helpful to determine ? using available peer-reviewed studies ? what works and what doesn?t work, so health care providers can make evidence-based recommendations,? said Karina W. Davidson, PhD, director, Center for Behavioral Cardiovascular Health, Columbia University Medical Center, and an author of the study. ?Since more patients are participating in online weight loss or management programs, these results reveal that computer-based delivery can be effective.?

According to the researchers, although their review did not cover smartphones, these could now take the place of desktop computers or laptops in delivering online weight management programmes. ?Since we started the review, smartphones have become capable of functioning like fully mobile computers with interactive potential similar to that of laptops and desktops,? said Wieland. ?We hope to include trials of smartphones when we update this review.?

Oil falls on new signs of slowing global economy

The price of oil fell Monday on a new sign that Asian countries won't make up for slackened oil demand in Europe.

Japan says its economy grew less than expected during the second quarter. Consumer spending, which makes up more than half the nation's economic activity, fell, and export demand was anemic.

Economies in China, a huge importer of oil, India and other Asian countries also have slowed. That is worrisome because the Asia-Pacific region helped carry the global economy when the U.S. and Europe began to slow.

The Japan news comes after the International Energy Agency last week cut its global oil demand forecast for the year, citing "a weak economic backdrop."

Benchmark oil fell 26 cents to $92.62 per barrel in New York. The drop mirrored a decline in U.S. stock prices.

Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, rose 56 cents to $113.51 per barrel in London.

Brent is likely getting support from traders concerned about supply disruptions from the Middle East because of the potential for a regional conflict. That could affect shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, through which about one-fifth of the world's oil travels.

Meanwhile, the national average price for gasoline rose less than a penny overnight to $3.696 per gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and the Oil Price Information Service. That's about 30 cents more than a month ago and nearly 10 cents more than a year ago.

Other futures prices on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

? Heating oil rose a penny to $3.03 per gallon.

? Gasoline was unchanged at $3.01 per gallon.

? Natural gas fell 1 cent to $2.76 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Omaha Tap House | Omaha Restaurant Review | at the red table

If you?re looking for upscale bar food at reasonable prices, then Omaha Tap House may be a good bet. Last week I (plus my husband and my friend) was invited to the new gastropub at 14th & Farnam to sample the food and beverages at a private grand opening event. I?m happy to say I don?t feel obligated to give a good review since I received free food and drinks ? because the restaurant has a good thing going regardless.

tap_nachos2

Omaha Tap House, which opens today, promises starters like Pig Wings and Short Rib Nachos, a variety of specialty burgers including a Wild Mushroom burger, Brown Sugar Burger and Roasted Beet burger, salads like the Salmon Bacon Ranch or Roasted Pear, a Pork & Pickle and Rotisserie Chicken and Honey Basil sandwiches, plus other inventive dishes like the Honey Dijon Pasta. Plus, the restaurant and bar offers 33 craft beers, a selection of wines and classic cocktails with a twist ? like the Warsaw Mule.

tap_sign

Omaha Tap House is in a prime location in the first floor of the Paxton building in downtown Omaha and has a wall of large windows so passersby can see the hustle and bustle of activity inside. The place is an L-shaped space with a decent-sized bar, a couple of flat-screen TVs and plenty of tables and booths to accommodate a large number of people. Friday night, the place was packed with bloggers, media and, presumably, folks from the Paxton, so our dining experience was ? well ? it was loud. Don?t expect an intimate dining experience at Omaha Tap House; instead, expect a sort of open diner-like atmosphere. Incidentally, Speaker of the House John Boehner was dining at the steakhouse next door -- just a fun little FYI.

tap_menu

The wait staff was prompt and attentive, but much of that could have been attributed to the celebratory grand-opening vibe. In fact, we had more than one waiter and more than one manager-type stop by our table to see how everything was, which was lovely if a bit overdone, but probably only due to the special event. We also felt a bit rushed. Our appetizer arrived on top of our drinks, and our entrees arrived shortly after that. We also never got a chance to enjoy a second drink because of the collision of courses and constant attention at our table.

tap_wine

Admittedly, I showed little adventurousness in the drink department and had a white wine, which was fine as house white wines go. My husband, however, ordered a Warsaw Mule, which was a twist on the classic Moscow Mule featuring vodka, lime, mint and ginger beer in an ice cold copper mug. John really enjoyed the drink, but I found it to be far too gingery for my taste, and that?s probably just a matter of personal taste all together.

tap_warsaw

We had barely touched the Short Rib Nachos (which arrived a little on the cold side) before our main courses were plopped down in front of us, so I don?t know if the nachos got the attention they deserved. I noticed the cheese was a little cold, but that may have been because I took a few minutes to take pictures of them first (an annoying food blogger necessity), and the ?house cheese sauce? resembled and tasted like good old-fashioned Velveeta. What made the nachos special was the tender short rib meat (that, incidentally, is incredibly un-photogenic) and the ice-cream-scoop-sized dollops of sour cream. Other than that, these nachos were pretty run of the mill.

tap_nachos

We all ordered something different as our entrees so we could get a good sampling of what the gastropub offered. I had the Wild Mushroom Burger, which is a weird choice for me since I don?t like mushrooms. This burger, though, may just convince me to introduce more fungi into my diet. It was cooked perfectly (medium), so it was juicy and flavorful. The mushrooms added the expected earthiness to the burger, but if I?m being honest, the star of this sandwich was the thick slice of cheddar on top. I?m a cheese fiend, so maybe I?m biased, but that hunk-o-cheddah totally made the burger.

tap_mushroom

My husband?s Roasted Beet Burger was equally augmented by the cheese on it ? this one featured goat cheese. He hadn?t had beets in years, but this burger, with its deep-red beet and tangy goat cheese was a hit. I had a taste and was impressed with the combo as well, and I?m a card-carrying beet-hater.

tap_beet2

The fries served with both the burgers were perfectly crispy and seasoned well with something that tasted like Lawry?s. I am a fry connoisseur and these crispy spuds were the real deal.

tap_beet

My friend Elaine had the Honey Dijon pasta as her entr?e, and I have to say, this was the most interesting dish of the bunch. Tangy, pungent and absolutely covered in cheese and loaded with grilled chicken, this pasta was one of those dishes that takes two or three bites to decide whether you love it or can?t eat another bite. If you are not a fan of Dijon mustard, this dish isn?t for you; however, if you are a fan, this pasta is absolutely a must-try ? cheesy, tangy and unexpected.

Tap_pasta

Overall, the Omaha Tap House is a pleasant dining experience. I need to go back during a normal evening to truly evaluate the service and to sample other intriguing dishes on the menu, but on the first go-round, I was happily satisfied and will go back for more.

Zanzibar to deregister Iranian oil tankers

The government in Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania, will deregister Iranian oil tankers flying its flag to dodge sanctions, Maritime Transport Minister Rashid Suleiman Seif said Monday.

"It was an unfortunate move," Seif said in reference to the decision to allow as many as 36 tankers and container ships that are Iranian-owned to operate under a flag of convenience.

"The government has decided to deregister the ships, and also be careful when registering foreign ships," he told AFP.

Reflagging Iranian oil tankers allowed Tehran to evade sanctions imposed by the United States and European Union because of its nuclear programme.

Swapping a ship's flag for that of a different nation not facing sanctions allows for the easier movement of the vessel.

Abdallah Kombo, the director of the Zanzibar Maritime Authority (ZMA), said it was "cheated" by its Dubai-based agent Philtex Corporation, which is alleged to have reflagged the Iranian vessels.

"We are verifying the evidence, but our agent Philtex in Dubai is disputing the number of ships, saying not all the 36 ships are owned by Iran. We also need to establish how Philtex cheated us," he told AFP.

Philtex Corporation executives have been quoted in United Arab Emirates media as denying having registered any Iranian vessels under a flag of convenience.

On Friday Zanzibar's Vice President Seif Ali Iddi told the island's parliament the authorities had investigated and confirmed "that 36 crude oil tankers and container ships flying the Tanzania flag are indeed from Iran."

The tankers were registered by Zanzibar Maritime Authority (ZMA) through Philtex, Iddi said, adding that the government was deregistering all the ships and also annulling the "contract with Philtex for misleading us."

A US lawmaker in June accused Tanzania of helping Tehran dodge international sanctions by allowing Iranian vessels to fly the Tanzanian flag.

On July 1 the EU began banning oil imports as well as the provision of insurance for vessels carrying Iranian oil. The United States has also put in place new economic sanctions that have curbed Iranian oil imports by many nations.

But the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) changed the names and flags of many of its vessels ahead of the EU ban.

Rebel video claims to show captured Syrian pilot

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian rebels circulated dramatic video Monday of what they claimed was the downing of a warplane and armed men later holding the captured pilot who ejected as the MiG fighter was engulfed by flames. Syria acknowledged a pilot bailed out of a disabled plane but blamed the crash on a technical malfunction.

The authenticity of the images or the claims could not be independently verified. If the rebels did bring down their first aircraft, that could signal a significant jump in their firepower and give opposition forces their most high-profile military captive.

But wider questions remain even if the rebel reports are confirmed, including whether this could be just a one-time blow against expanding air offensives by the forces of Bashar Assad's regime. Just days ago, protesters across Syria pleaded for the rebels' main backers ? including Turkey and Gulf states ? to send anti-aircraft weapons for outgunned fighters.

Assad's military has significantly stepped up aerial attacks in recent weeks. Strafing from warplanes and close-range missile strikes from helicopter gunships have pushed back rebels in key fronts such as Aleppo, the country's largest city and the scene of fierce attacks to dislodge rebel positions.

As the sun was setting on Monday, an Associated Press reporter saw two fighter jets over the village of Marea, 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of Aleppo.

Terrified residents collected on street corners and near the doors to their houses to watch and point as the jets dived low, dropping bombs that sent up clouds of smoke and firing machine guns that crackled over the village.

On one crowded market street, a handful of rebels with rifles ran toward the site of the bombings.

"What are you going to do, bring down a jet with a rifle?" a man screamed.

After the jets left, young men on motorcycles rushed to the bombing site on the edge of the village to find two craters the size of cars in a dirt field next to a swimming pool.

A man working at the privately owned pool said only three people were there at the time and that none was injured. He didn't give his name and tried to chase away journalists and residents seeking to film the pool.

It is unclear why the area was targeted. Residents said there was no rebel base nearby.

"In the summer, it's hot so the guys gather here to swim," said Abdullah Najjar, 21, adding that some of them could have been rebels.

"This is the only place we have in town to come for entertainment."

Nationwide, the relentless bloodshed ? including alleged massacres by pro-regime mobs and retaliation killings by rebels ? has already claimed more than 20,000 lives, activists say, and will be further examined in a report expected Wednesday by the U.N. Human Rights Council's independent commission probing abuses in Syria.

In another crack in Assad's diplomatic corps, a Syrian diplomat who worked with the U.N. rights council in Geneva said he left his post to join the opposition. A spokesman for the council, Rolando Gomez, identified the Syrian as Danny al-Baaj and described him as a junior member of his country's U.N. mission. Syria is not a member of the 47-nation council, but al-Baaj worked with it as part of his duties.

The claims of bringing down the warplane and capturing the pilot, meanwhile, are likely to become a key propaganda tool to rally rebel fighters.

Activists released a video which they say showed a government Soviet-made MiG warplane catching fire after it was hit by ground fire over Deir el-Zour province, an area near the Iraqi border where the opposition has strongholds. Hours later, another video shown on the pan-Arab network Al-Arabiya purported to show the captured pilot surrounded by armed rebels. "Introduce yourself," says another speaker with his back to the camera.

The alleged captive identified himself as Col. Rafik Mohammed Suleiman and says he was on a mission to attack a rebel-held area.

"What do you tell the officers of the Assad army?" the speaker asks the man, whose beard and hair are flecked with gray. The man who identified himself as the pilot urges them to defect.

The speaker ? whose face remained hidden ? said the hostage will be treated according to tenets of Islam and the Geneva Convention. The later reference could be an indirect reply to recent international outrage over videos posted on the Internet claiming to show summary executions and torture by rebels, including bloodied prisoners being gunned down against a wall as people cried: "Free Syrian Army Forever!"

Syria's state-run SANA news agency said the pilot ejected from a warplane after a technical failure during a "training mission." It added that a search was under way to find the pilot.

The Britain-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the plane was hit as it was conducting air raids on the town of Muhassan, which is close to a military airfield. The group quoted activists in the area as saying the plane was hit with fire from a heavy machine gun used by rebels in the area.

Syria has such anti-aircraft weapons in its arsenal and it's possible that some could have fallen into rebel hands. In June, Syria said it used anti-aircraft machine gun fire to bring down a Turkish F-4 Phantom fighter jet it claimed crossed into Syrian aircraft. Turkey said the plane was in international flight zones.

Theodore Karasik, a regional security expert at the Dubai-based Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis, said the rebel claim ? if true ? would suggest a stepped-up flow of outside military assistance. Older anti-aircraft weapons, possibly looted from Syrian arsenals such as variations on the Soviet-era SA-7, are considered overmatched by later model MiGs in the Syrian air force.

"If this is true, the conjecture would be that covert aid to the rebels is expanding with higher-grade anti-aircraft capabilities," Karasik said.

Gulf states such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar have pledged to help supply the Syrian rebels, but the extent of the aid is unclear. Rebel commanders have consistently complained about lack of ammunition, including during recent battles in Aleppo. Last week, anti-regime protesters across Syria staged rallies calling for greater anti-aircraft firepower.

The possibility of a high-ranking military captive also could raise pressure on Assad's regime after a series of abductions, including 48 Iranians taken earlier this month and 11 Lebanese Shiites seized in May.

Rebels claim the Iranians include members of Tehran's Revolutionary Guard and were on a "reconnaissance mission" in Damascus. Iran insists the men were on a religious pilgrimage. The Lebanese are apparently held to try to pressure the government in Beirut to show greater support for the rebels ? which is unlikely because of the strong influence of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, which backs Assad.

On Sunday, the head of Syria's main opposition group in exile renewed a plea for international powers to impose a no-fly zone in border areas to protect civilians who are coming under increasingly intense attacks by regime warplanes and helicopters.

The site of the plane incident ? the eastern, oil-rich region of Deir el-Zour ? has been the site of heavy clashes between government troops and rebels over the past week. Syrian Prime Minister Riad Hijab, who defected to Jordan earlier this month, comes from the area.

Besides the rising death tolls in clashes ? more than 50 on Monday according to the activist Observatory group ? at least three Syria-based journalists have been killed in recent days. Al-Ikhbariya TV also said two other journalists and their driver are being held by rebels near the capital Damascus.

Smelling a skunk after a cold: Brain changes after a stuffed nose protect the sense of smell

ScienceDaily (Aug. 12, 2012) ? Has a summer cold or mold allergy stuffed up your nose and dampened your sense of smell? We take it for granted that once our nostrils clear, our sniffers will dependably rebound and alert us to a lurking neighborhood skunk or a caramel corn shop ahead.

That dependability is no accident. It turns out the brain is working overtime behind the scenes to make sure the sense of smell is just as sharp after the nose recovers.

A new Northwestern Medicine study shows that after the human nose is experimentally blocked for one week, brain activity rapidly changes in olfactory brain regions. This change suggests the brain is compensating for the interruption of this vital sense. The brain activity returns to a normal pattern shortly after free breathing has been restored.

Previous research in animals has suggested that the olfactory system is resistant to perceptual changes following odor deprivation. This new paper focuses on humans to show how that's possible. The study is published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

"You need ongoing sensory input in order for your brain to update smell information," said Keng Nei Wu, the lead author of the paper and a graduate student in neuroscience at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. "When your nostrils are blocked up, your brain tries to adjust to the lack of information so the system doesn't break down. The brain compensates for the lack of information so when you get your sense of smell back, it will be in good working order."

For the study, Wu completely blocked the nostrils of 14 participants for a week while they lived in a special low-odor hospital room. At night, participants were allowed to breathe normally while they slept in the room.

After the smell deprivation, researchers found an increase in activity in the orbital frontal cortex and a decrease of activity in the piriform cortex, two regions related to the sense of smell.

"These changes in the brain are instrumental in maintaining the way we smell things even after seven days of no smell," Wu said.

When unrestricted breathing was restored, people were immediately able to perceive odors. A week after the deprivation experience, the brain's response to odors had returned to pre-experimental levels, indicating that deprivation-caused changes are rapidly reversed.

Such a rapid reversal is quite different from other sensory systems, such as sight, which typically have longer-lasting effects due to deprivation. The olfactory system is more agile, Wu suggested, because smell deprivation due to viral infection or allergies is common.

This study also has clinical significance relating to upper respiratory infection and sinusitis, especially when such problems become chronic, at which point ongoing deprivation could cause more profound and lasting changes, Wu noted.

"It also implies that deprivation has a significant impact on the brain, rather than on the nose itself," Wu said. "More knowledge about how the system reacts to short-term deprivation may provide new insights into how to deal with this problem in a chronic context."
