B&N Considers Spinning Off Nook Business Amidst Record Sales

Barnes & Noble?s Nook family of tablets experienced record sales during the nine-week holiday period at the end of 2011, the company announced.

Color tablets Nook Color and Nook Tablet sold especially well, while the black and white Nook Simple Touch underperformed, Barnes & Noble says.

The company expects the digital content sales for 2012 to be around $450 million, with the annualized forecast between $700 million and $750 million.

Overall, the device and content sales were so good that the company is considering spinning off the Nook business altogether.

?We see substantial value in what we?ve built with our Nook business in only two years, and we believe it?s the right time to investigate our options to unlock that value,? said CEO William Lynch.

Of course, the fact that Barnes & Noble is exploring this option doesn?t necessarily mean it will ever happen, but with Nook growing to a $1.5 billion business this fiscal year, it might be the right time to turn it into a separate business entity.

The company also said it is in discussions with strategic partners to expand the Nook business internationally.

Barnes & Noble?s chief competitor, Amazon, also recently reported great sales of its Kindle family of ereaders and tablets. Amazon sold more than 4 million Kindles during the holidays, making it the best holiday ever for the Kindle family of products.

Utah basketball: Washington State forward is a big man, big scorer

Of all the teams in the Pac-12, the Utes may have drawn the most favorable matchups to open conference play.

Colorado and Washington State to start things off, the two teams picked in the preseason to tie for 10th in the floundering conference? Talk about easing into things.

Unless you?re the last-place Utes.

?There?s no point in our schedule that is favorable,? coach Larry Krystkowiak said. ?It?s kind of fighting for everything that we?re going to try to get.?

At 3-10 and having already lost to Colorado by the fourth-worst margin in program history (73-33), Utah (3-10) is entering a daunting stretch. Washington State (9-5) plays at the Huntsman Center on Thursday, followed by high-flying Washington on Saturday. Next week: games in the Bay Area to take on conference favorites Stanford and Cal.

The Cougars have been better than expected this season behind 14.9 points per game from forward Brock Motum. Motum scored 26 points, including three 3-pointers, in Washington State?s 81-76 win over Oregon State in Spokane.

Motum is 6-foot-10 and polished offensively, the sort of player the Utes haven?t seen this season with the exception of Brigham Young?s Noah Hartsock.

The Utes may need to hold open tryouts sooner if they want to find someone to match up with the Australian.

Story continues below

?It?s going to kind of have to be a team element,? Krystkowiak said. ?We?ve had a few different plans along the way. I thought DJ [Dijon Farr] did a pretty good job on Hartsock. ? He can get locked into guarding somebody.?

But Farr is 6-foot-6 and, at his best, a wing player and 6-foot-10 center Jason Washburn is not known for his defensive grit.

If the Utes can?t slow Motum, there?s no reason they couldn?t be on course for another record-book loss.

Utah point guard Josh ?Jiggy? Watkins said the Utes are in no position to look at the Cougars as another bottom-of-the-Pac team.

?We?ve got to take this game as if this is a Top 25 team,? Watkins said. ?That?s how we have to approach this game, and that?s how we have to play.?

To their kind credit, Washington State is taking the same approach with Utah before jetting off to Colorado to play the Buffaloes on Saturday.

?We understand that Utah is good enough to beat us,? coach Ken Bone said, ?there?s no doubt about it.?

'Dancing With the Stars' champ J.R. Martinez to be honored with parade

  • In this image released by ABC-TV, war veteran and actor J.R. Martinez, right, and his partner Karina Smirnoff hold their award with host Tom Bergeron after they were crowned champions of the celebrity dance competition series, "Dancing with the Stars, " Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011 in Los Angeles. IF YOU GO

What: Welcome-home parade and ceremony for J.R. Martinez.

When and where: Parade, 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday through downtown Dalton; ceremony, 3:30 p.m. at Northwest Georgia Trade & Convention Center, 2211 Dug Gap Battle Road, Dalton

Admission: Free.

Phone: 706-272-7676.

Website: www.nwgtcc.com.

Saturday, the city of Dalton will honor the accomplishments of celebrated hometown war hero, actor and reality TV star J.R. Martinez with an afternoon of activities in his honor.

Martinez will ride at the head of a parade through the Northwest Georgia city. Later in the afternoon, he will attend an awards ceremony at the Northwest Georgia Trade & Convention Center, where he will be recognized for his athletic contributions as a former strong safety for the Dalton High School Catamounts, his service in the Army's 101st Airborne Division and his recent winning turn on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars."

The free event, which is being organized by the Dalton Chamber of Commerce, will offer residents a chance to praise one of their own during a particularly beleaguered time, said Rebecca Bolton, the Trade Center's director of sales and marketing.

"It's just a thank you to him for being an important person to the community," Bolton said. "Around here, he's known as a stand-up guy who has come through difficult times with light.

"Faced with the most challenging set of circumstances, he was able to come through and be a hero. That's something that, especially right now in this area, represents hope."

In 2003, Martinez, then 19, was severely injured shortly after he arrived in Iraq with the other members of the Army's 101st Airborne Division. The Humvee he was driving struck a mine, leaving Martinez with severe burns to 40 percent of his body. He has since had more than 30 corrective surgeries to address those injuries.

Although he received national attention for his talent as an amateur dancer on "Dancing With the Stars," Daltonians have long recognized Martinez for the wounds he received during his service and the positive attitude he demonstrated during his recovery.

In addition to his work as a motivational speaker, Martinez spent three years portraying injured war veteran Brot Monroe on the ABC soap opera "All My Children" until the show's cancellation in September.

County Commission Chairman Mike Babb and Dalton Mayor David Pennington officially will recognize Saturday as J.R. Martinez Day.

In an interview while Martinez was still in the midst of his run on the ABC reality show, Pennington said Martinez was continuing to shine a positive light on the city he calls home.

"He brings great glory to this community," Pennington said. "We're somewhat sort of used to this because this is the home of [Emmy Award-winning TV personality] Deborah Norville and [Major League Baseball pitcher] Mitchell Boggs.

"Dalton has produced a lot of special people over the years."

The Samsung Note Is Definitively Not Coming To AT&T As Far As You Know

pink_flip_flopRemember the mini-slate Samsung released a few months ago? The Samsung Galaxy Note? Pretty cool little device. As we enter CES week, the press releases are flying fast and furious and this one caught my eye. It's for a small company that makes accessories for gadgets and I suppose (I can't find the original) it outlined Anymode's plans for Samsung Note accessories. The release also noted that the Samsung Note would hit AT&T this year. There were rumors of this, but Anymode essentially confirmed it. Until they didn't.

So what kind of film is John planning to make about his life? "It's going to be a surreal look at my life, and not just a factual look at my life, more in the manner of a 'Moulin Rouge,'" he told the Los Angeles Times. "I just don't want it to be a normal biopic because my life hasn't been like that. And it only goes up to when I go into rehab in 1990. It starts with me going into rehab and ends when I come out."

John added that he'd be "making an announcement about (the film) very, very soon" and already has a director on board. "It's just going to be a matter of getting the script exactly the way we want it ... then we'll start trying to cast and plan."

School energy savings likely to top $1 million

By SEN ODONOGHUE
Managing Editor

HAMLIN - The county school systems energy manager told the Lincoln County Board of Education, last week, that a four-year $1 million energy saving target looks set to be achieved by next spring. However, in a separate development, the countys superintendent clarfied that final approval is still awaited for a major overhaul of windows at two educational facilities in the county.

Energy Manager Joe Parsons was speaking at the Tuesday, December 20, 2011 regular session of the board in Hamlin. Since May, 2008, the county has been part of an energy management program. In return for paying to take part in the program, the county is provided with software to help monitor energy use. County personnel are offered special training in the energy field.

Throughout the four years, Parsons has worked with school personnel to heighten energy awareness in the countys schools. Among the many measures taken was the installation of timed thermostats at county facilities.

The countys energy consumption was ascertained for what was termed the base year, from May 2007 to April of 2008. The four years since then have been charted in comparison with the base year.

Parsons told the board last week that gas consumption had fallen as follows:
YEAR ONE: A reduction of 2,237 Mcf
YEAR TWO: A reduction of 3,201 Mcf
YEAR THREE: A reduction of 3,244 Mcf
YEAR FOUR: A reduction of 2,833 Mcf (through 7 months, May to November)
That represented a total reduction of 11,515 Mcf.
He also provided details on the drop in electricity consumption.
YEAR ONE: A reduction of 1,940,246 kWh
YEAR TWO: A reduction of 2,119,814 kWh
YEAR THREE: A reduction of 2,145,010 kWh

YEAR FOUR: A reduction of 1,545,832 kWh (through 7 months, May to November)

The total reduction in electricity consumption came to 7,750,902 kWh.

Parsons paid tribute to the countys school personnel and leadership for their cooperation. Your staff are phenomenal, said Parsons.

Windows

Contrary to reports in some Charleston media outlets recently, two major school window projects in the Lincoln County are still awaiting final approval.

Lincoln Superintendent Patricia Lucas updated the five members of the board of education at the same meeting last week, regarding plans to replace windows at Hamlin PK-8 and at Ranger Elementary.

Earlier this year, the Lincoln board sought approval to amend the countys 2010-2020 Comprehensive Educational Facilties Plan (CEFP). On September 20, 2011 the board approved the amendment, submitting Hamlin PK-8 windows and Ranger Elementary windows as priority 1 and priority 2 items respectively.

The total cost of the projects was estimated at $190,000, of which $45,000 would be county-funded.

Lucas clarified to the board that the requested amendment had been approved by the West Virginia School Building Authority. However, the final approval and funding for the window projects had yet to be given by the authority.
