Novartis drug investigated after 11 deaths (AP)

LONDON ? A multiple sclerosis drug made by industry giant Novartis is under investigation after at least 11 patients taking the medicine died.

The drug, Gilenya, was licensed last year in the European Union to treat patients with a severe type of multiple sclerosis.

The deaths raise concerns Gilenya could trigger heart problems after patients take their first dose, according to a statement issued Friday by the European Medicines Agency. The agency, which is now investigating the drug, said it isn't clear if it caused the deaths.

One of the deaths was in the U.S., where a patient died within 24 hours of taking the first dose.

The European agency said it didn't know where the other 10 deaths occurred, but that they were reported to its drug database, which monitors side effects from medicines in the European Union.

A spokeswoman at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it also is conducting a data analysis but has not made any definitive conclusions and does not know when its review will be complete.

More than 30,000 patients have taken Gilenya worldwide. The European Medicines Agency advised doctors to increase their monitoring of patients after the first dose of the medicine. The agency said the risk of a slow heart rate after the first dose of Gilenya was known when it was approved.

Novartis AG said it was advising doctors of new recommendations on using Gilenya. They had previously recommended all patients be monitored for six hours after their first dose, but are now tightening that to include continuous heart monitoring using electrocardiograms and measuring blood pressure and heart rate every hour. In certain patients, that monitoring should be extended, the drug maker said in a statement.

This new guidance applies only to patients taking their first dose, Novartis said in a statement.

The EU drug regulator hopes to finish its review of the drug by March.

Iran lawmaker: Obama sent secret letter to Ayatollah

By NBC News and msnbc.com news services

Updated 3:30 p.m. ET: White House spokesman Jay Carney would not confirm the?letter or overtures for direct talks?with Iran when asked?in a news briefing on?Wednesday, NBC News reported.

"We don't discuss specific communications -- diplomatic communications. I would say that we have a variety of channels through which we can communicate with the Iranians. And that any message we communicate to the Iranians about these issues is -- would be entirely consistent with what we've said publicly, what I've said publicly, the president, secretary of state and others."

Original story: An Iranian lawmaker claimed Wednesday that President?Barack Obama called for direct talks with Iran in a secret letter to the Islamic Republic's supreme leader that also warned Tehran against closing the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Obama administration officials denied to The Associated Press there was such a letter. A report in The New York Times on Jan. 12 quoted unnamed U.S. government officials as saying?a similar letter had been sent.

Iran has threatened to close the waterway, the route for about one-sixth of the global oil flow, because of new U.S. sanctions over its nuclear program.

Conservative lawmaker Ali Motahari revealed the content of the purported letter days after the Obama administration said it was warning Iran through public and private channels against any action that threatens the flow of oil from the Persian Gulf.

"In the letter, Obama called for direct talks with Iran," the semiofficial Fars news agency quoted Motahari as saying Wednesday. "The letter also said that closing the Strait of Hormuz is (Washington's) red line."

"The first part of the letter contains threats and the second part contains an offer for dialogue," he added.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast confirmed that Tehran received the letter and was considering a possible response.

In Washington, an Obama administration official denied that Obama sent a letter to Ayatollah Ali Khamanei, saying communication of U.S. views were being delivered through other diplomatic messages. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

U.S. forces are?fully prepared to deal with any Iranian threats?to close the Strait of Hormuz, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said on Wednesday.

"We are not (taking) any special steps at this point in order to deal with the situation,'' Panetta told reporters at the Pentagon, Reuters reported. "Why? Because frankly we are fully prepared to deal with that situation now.''

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

More bad news about Ali for 'Teen Mom' Leah

MTV

Ali tries on splints for the first time at a physical therapy session on "Teen Mom 2."

By Drusilla Moorhouse, E! Online

Like ancient Greek drama, we can always count on "Teen Mom 2" for its tragic irony.

After making headlines this week for two arrests relating to her former roommate, Jenelle Evans' storyline on last night's episode was all about -- you guessed it -- roommates!

Plus, Chelsea lands a dream job, Kailyn is stifling Jo's music career and Leah gets more bad news about baby Ali....

MORE: "Teen Mom's" Jenelle Evans Out of Jail -- but Could Be Heading Back

Chelsea is living the "Teen Mom" dream -- she landed a job at -- wait for it! -- a tanning salon. Baby daddy Adam may not be around much, but Chelsea can count on "Year Round Brown" for a steady paycheck, an unnatural skin tone and all the other benefits derived from overexposure to UV radiation.

Kailyn may be the only "Teen Mom 2" star going to college, but she still struggles with Communications 101. To wit: Baby daddy Jo's family learning she was dating around via her Facebook status update; stealing her mom's TV in a super-stealth move-out; and filing for child support without talking to Jo about it first.

LAST WEEK'S RECAP: "Teen Mom 2" Double-Feature: Cheese Puffs and Other Miracles

Even though he needs the money for his "music career" (!!!?we'll get to that momentarily!), Jo's proven he is a responsible father. Their courthouse battle over child support will make for excellent reality drama, but we'd rather see Jo aka N.I.C.K. B debut his rap talents.

Enough with the mixed messages! First we have Corey contrasting a camouflage cap with a neon T-shirt, then Leah's geneticist is trying to scare all our happy away. Just last week we were celebrating baby Ali's "normal" test results and first time standing; tonight Leah was told her young daughter might actually suffer from skeletal dysplasia -- or dwarfism. Whatever her condition turns out to be (and recent pictures show a very stark contrast between Ali and her twin sister's development), we know their coal-mining fairy tale does not come true.

Back at home with her mom and son, Jenelle is "about to flip the (bleep) out" because she's gone almost a day without smoking pot, blaming mom Barbara for not sympathizing with her stressful life. For once, Barbara's response is calm. Or maybe she's just exhausted. "I did not choose to have a baby at 57," said Jace's grandma and legal guardian. "You chose to have a baby and you put all the responsibility on me."

PHOTOS: "16 and Pregnant's" Teen Moms: Where Are They Now?

The best thing for it, Jenelle decides, is to move in with friends Tori and Tyler (at least they're not Hannah and James) and reunite with hoodied hoodlum Kieffer. While packing her room, Tori asked Jenelle how she felt about leaving "so many memories." Why didn't they stage this scene when Jenelle moved out of her car and left behind those Ed Hardy seatcovers?

Are you surprised about the latest health crisis for baby Ali? And do you think Jenelle will ever get her act together? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

NFL conference championships coming up

A potential Superbowl rematch is in the cards

A potential Superbowl rematch is in the cards

So, it'll be San Francisco versus the New York Giants and New England versus Baltimore. All for the right to go to the biggest game of the year. No more upstart Broncos, no more defending-champ Packers. No more surprise Texans, and no more record-breaking Saints.

Obviously, the majority of the public wants to see a rematch of Super Bowl XLII with the Patriots facing the Giants. It's not that simple, though.

In order to get past the 49ers, the Giants will have to overcome the underdog story of the year. With Alex Smith (he of the No. 1 pick who has disappointed in almost every one of his six previous seasons in the NFL) gunning, the 49ers have impressed upon nearly everyone by now the fact that they are a serious team. By beating the New Orleans Saints in dramatic?if not overwhelming?fashion, the 49ers have proved that its sometimes-anemic offense (especially in regards to the passing game) is not a problem and its defense is a facet upon which they may hang their collective hat.

The Giants, on the other hand, rolled over the Green Bay Packers in such demonstrative fashion that their offense, which was well-heralded previously, may become secondary to a defensive unit that sacked opposing quarterback Aaron Rodgers four times. The Giants also had their way on offense, with Eli Manning picking apart the Packers' defense in way that was rather embarrassing.

In the AFC, the New England Patriots put an end to the miracle story of Tim Tebow's Broncos. The team-that-could just ran into a buzz saw and was clearly outmatched. Tebow outlived expectations this year and should be proud of the wins he (and the Broncos defense) managed this season, as well as making it to the playoffs, but the Patriots offense hung 45 points on the vaunted Broncos defense.

New England looks to continue its performance next weekend against the Baltimore Ravens, whose defense is miles ahead of the Broncos. The only hitch in the Ravens' game plan could be found in their regular season record: Of the four games they lost, all were away from home. Next week they'll play at Gillette Stadium, where New England is a tidy 7-1. That sole loss, by the way? It came to the New York Giants.

Both games will be televised on Sunday, with Baltimore and New England at 1 PM on CBS, and New York playing in San Francisco at 4:30 p.m. on Fox.

Suspect in CA killings returned from Iraq changed (AP)

YORBA LINDA, Calif. ? Just months after he was deployed to Iraq in 2008, a Marine veteran now suspected in the deaths of four homeless men in Southern California sent his family a short, upbeat video greeting.

The video, which was mostly in Spanish, showed Itzcoatl Ocampo wishing his father a happy Father's Day and reading an excerpt from Dr. Seuss' "Green Eggs and Ham" to his then 10-year-old sister.

The former Marine's 17-year-old brother, Mixcoatl Ocampo, recalled how happy his family members were when they got the video in the mail that summer. They all gathered around the television in the living room to watch Itzcoatl Ocampo, who appeared in fatigues and talked against the backdrop of an American flag.

"We hadn't seen my brother since he got deployed," he said. "Dad saw the video, and when he first saw it he was thrilled."

According to friends and family, a much darker Ocampo returned home after he was discharged in 2010. His parents separated, and his father eventually became homeless.

Now, Ocampo's family is left trying to reconcile the smiling, slightly nervous-sounding soldier in the video greeting friends and family with the blankly staring man in the police mug shot accused of murder.

Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas has scheduled a news conference for 11 a.m. Tuesday to announce charges against Itzcoatl Ocampo. The 23-year-old is expected to be charged with four counts of murder in the serial killings of four homeless men since late December.

He was arrested Jan. 13 after a locally known homeless man, John Berry, 64, was stabbed to death outside an Anaheim fast-food restaurant. Bystanders gave chase, and police made the arrest. Ocampo is being held in isolation at the central jail in Santa Ana for his own safety because of the notoriety of the case, according to Lt. Hal Brotheim, a spokesman with the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

Ocampo's father, 49-year-old Refugio Ocampo, said his son came back a changed man after serving in Iraq, expressing disillusionment and becoming ever darker as his family life frayed and he struggled to find his way as a civilian.

The father said he lost his job and home, and ended up living under a bridge before finding shelter in the cab of a broken-down big-rig he is helping repair.

Just days before his elder son's arrest, Itzcoatl Ocampo came to visit his father, warning him of the danger of being on the streets and showing him a picture of one of the victims.

"He was very worried about me," Refugio Ocampo told The Associated Press on Sunday. "I told him, `Don't worry. I'm a survivor. Nothing will happen to me.'"

Itzcoatl Ocampo had been living with his mother, uncle, and younger brother and sister in a rented house on a horse ranch surrounded by the sprawling suburbs of Yorba Linda. At the humble home, his mother, who speaks little English, tearfully brought her son's Marine Corps dress uniform out of a closet and showed unit photos, citations and medals from his military service.

The son followed a friend into the Marine Corps right out of high school in 2006 instead of going to college as his father had hoped. Itzcoatl Ocampo was discharged in 2010 and returned home to find his family in disarray, his father said.

The same month, one of Itzcoatl Ocampo's friends, 22-year-old Cpl. Claudio Patino IV of Yorba Linda, was killed in combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

"Once he received the news, he was never the same," Mixcoatl Ocampo said. He said his brother visited Patino's grave twice a week.

Refugio and Mixcoatl both described a physical condition Itzcoatl suffered in which his hands shook and he suffered headaches. Medical treatments helped until he started drinking heavily, both said.

"He started drinking like crazy ? too much, way too much," the father said.

A neighbor who is a Vietnam veteran and the father both tried to push Itzcoatl to get treatment at a Veterans hospital, but he refused. Refugio Ocampo said he wanted his son to get psychological treatment as well.

"He started talking about stuff that didn't make any sense, that the end of the world was going to happen," he said.

While Refugio Ocampo lives away from his family, they remain close. He saw his children every day, and his wife brings food to the parking lot where the truck is located in the city of Fullerton.

Refugio Ocampo, who said he was educated as a lawyer in Mexico, immigrated with his wife and Itzcoatl in 1988 and became a U.S. citizen. He described building a successful life in which he became a warehouse manager and bought a home in Yorba Linda. In the past few years he lost his job, ran out of savings, lost his house and separated from his wife.

Standing near the truck where he sleeps, Refugio Ocampo fought back tears as he described the changes he saw in his son in the year since returning home.

"Before, he had the initiative to do things, the desire. But after the military, he didn't have any of that," he said.

Refugio Ocampo said investigators came to him Friday night and showed him surveillance photos from a crime scene, but he did not recognize his son as the person in the images.

"If he did it, it wasn't right, obviously. But there's something wrong with him," he said.

In addition to Berry and McGillivray, Lloyd Middaugh, 42, was killed near a riverbed trail in Anaheim on Dec. 28; and Paulus Smit, 57, was found dead outside a Yorba Linda library on Dec. 30.

Authorities have provided no information on evidence against Ocampo, or a possible motive. But Anaheim Police Chief John Welter has said investigators are confident they have the man responsible for the string of murders.
