Iran navy tests medium-range missile during drill (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran's navy said Sunday it has test-fired a medium-range surface-to-air missile during a drill in international waters near the strategic Strait of Hormuz ? the passageway for one-sixth of the world's oil supply.

State TV said the missile, named Mehrab, or Altar, has been designed to evade radars and was developed by Iranian scientists. The report didn't provide details or say when the missile was tested.

A spokesman for the exercise, Rear Adm. Mahmoud Mousavi, said the missile is one of the newest in the navy's arsenal.

"It's equipped with state-of-the-art technology and a built-in system that enables it to thwart jammers," Mousavi told state TV.

The exercise covers a 1,250-mile (2,000-kilometer) stretch of water beyond the Strait of Hormuz, including parts of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden.

The drill, which could bring Iranian ships into proximity with U.S. Navy vessels that operate in the same area, is Iran's latest show of strength in the face of mounting international criticism over its controversial nuclear program. The West fears Iran's program aims to develop atomic weapons ? a charge Tehran denies, insisting it's for peaceful purposes only.

The 10-day exercise drew significant attention after Iranian officials warned they may close the Strait of Hormuz, cutting off oil exports, if the West imposes sanctions on Iran's oil shipments.

But Iranian military officials later backed off from the threat, saying Tehran can easily close the strategic oil route at the mouth of the Persian Gulf but has no intention of doing so at this point.

Mousavi made a similar reconciliatory comment on Sunday.

"We won't disrupt traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. We are not after this," the semi-official ISNA news agency quoted him as saying.

India death toll climbs in wake of Cyclone Thane

The death toll from a storm that has pummeled India's southeastern coastline rose Saturday to 27, with thousands forced to seek refuge in emergency shelters, officials in the worst affected area said.

The Tamil Nadu district of Cuddalore, south of the city of Chennai, bore the brunt of Cyclone Thane's fury Friday, with winds gusting at almost 90 miles per hour at its peak.

The storm uprooted trees, ripped off traffic signals from their posts and sent shards of glass and other debris whizzing through the air.

Amuthavalli, the district's top official who goes by a single name, told CNN the number of residents killed stood at 27 as of Saturday but is not expected to climb much higher. Some lost their lives when walls collapsed or downed power lines caused electrocution.

One of those killed was a French national, the French Foreign Ministry said Saturday. France presents its sincere condolences to the victim's family and his loved ones, the ministry said.

The first priority is to restore power supplies, she said. Workers will then start clearing fallen trees and other wreckage from the district's roads. Read More

Fisker Karma recall is official, 239 cars will need their battery packs swapped

The folks at Fisker are probably more excited to see the calendar roll over than anyone, as a tumultuous 2011 comes to an end with another setback for the Karma. A battery issue previously thought to affect around 50 cars will actually result in the recall of 239. GigaOM points out an NHTSA notice confirming a problem with the positioning of hose clamps on the high-voltage Li-Ion batteries. It could result in said hoses leaking coolant into the battery creating the risk of an electrical short-circuit (still not seeing how this is a bad thing) and fire (oh), which the company will resolve by replacing the batteries. The recall probably covers everyone out there rolling like Walden Schmidt, since the CEO announced December 21st that 225 cars had been shipped and its factory was producing 25 cars per day. Still, assuming the ~$96k price tag isn't an issue, would you really let a little thing like potentially bursting into flames keep you away from such a sleek, smooth handling luxury coupe that puts 657hp of hybrid power at your disposal? Neither would we.

The Essence of Taste

Over the holidays my husband has been experimenting with Japanese cooking, and as various broths simmered on the stove and our collection of soy-based pastes and sauces expanded, my love affair with MSG was rekindled. MSG (monosodium glutamate) is the sodium salt of glutamic acid, a naturally occurring amino acid that makes up proteins. Glutamic acid was identified in 1908 by Kikunae Ikeda as the molecule responsible for the deliciousness of dashi, a stock made from simmered seaweed and fermented fish that is the base for many Japanese dishes. Dashi isn?t sweet, sour, salty, or bitter?the four tastes known before Professor Ikeda?s experiments?but it has a difficult to describe fifth taste that Ikeda called umami, which is Japanese for ?delicious.? Umami adds savoriness to many dishes and ?It stimulate[s] all surfaces of the tongue and oral cavity, producing a slight sensation of ?furriness? on the tongue, and a mild but lasting aftertaste.? Glutamic acid is present in high concentrations in many delicious foods and sauces, from veal stock to yeast extract to tomatoes and parmesan cheese. After experimenting with many different salts of glutamic acid, commercial production of MSG as an external flavor additive began in 1909 and was marketed as AJI-NO-MOTO, meaning ?the essence of taste.?

Sixty years later, the world of delicious cooking was thrown into chaos after a letter to the editor in The New England Journal of Medicine by the Chinese-American doctor Robert Ho Man Kwok suggested a possible link between MSG and a set of symptoms he had experienced after eating at American Chinese restaurants including numbness, weakness, and palpitation. Though he suggested many other possible causes for the symptoms and hoped that more research would be done, the journal titled the letter ?Chinese-Restaurant Syndrome? and a media-fueled anti-MSG frenzy was born. Many double-blind, placebo-controlled experiments later, no reproducible link has been found between MSG and any symptoms or negative health effects, but the stigma remains and even high-glutamic acid foods like miso paste are often misleadingly advertised as ?No MSG added.?

MSG is an interesting molecule, the key to many tasty dishes and a case study for our complicated relationship with food science. I wish everyone a happy and delicious 2012, where the food is flavorful and correlation is never mistaken for causation!
